Waterfalls and Butterflies

My family went on a trip to Niagara Falls. We’ve been talking about going for years, and it was an amazing time! But perhaps the most memorable moment for me personally was when we rode on the boat.

It took us directly into the mist. The water thundered around us, and the spray made it hard to see anything. I stepped back for a moment, and the sheer force of the mist made it difficult to keep my footing. I stared up at the water and realized just how small we are in the grand scheme of things.

We serve a powerful God. 3,160 tons of water flow over Niagara every second.1 That is an insane amount of water. But from a larger perspective, the falls is a small part of the earth, which is in turn a smaller part of the galaxy. It’s so hard for me to wrap my mind around how big our God is and how small we are.

But another thing that stuck out to me was visiting a butterfly conservatory in Canada. Butterflies are such beautiful creatures. They are all wonderfully designed. I saw shimmering blue green ones, pale white, small ones with red spots. All of them were different, yet designed perfectly by our Creator. I saw His fingerprints in each wing.

Yet God loves us each with an indescribable love. He knows all of our thoughts and dreams. He cares for every detail of our lives. He designed butterflies with beauty (more than is strictly necessary for survival). He controls the waterfalls. He is in charge, yet He cares so perfectly for us.

His love is powerful. He loves us more than we can ever imagine. May we always remember that.
